The Situation

Downderry is a small village on the South Cornwall coast with a tight-knit community of people from all backgrounds. St. Nicolas Church of England Primary school services the educational needs of about 100 of the village’s children. This has recently risen from 65, and is set to rise again as a number of family homes in the village near completion.

This recent expansion has meant the room which was previously used for communal activities (and was woefully inadequate anyway) has had to be taken over as a classroom… leaving the school without a school hall.

A school hall is essential for the school to fulfil all aspects of the National Curriculum. Building a new school hall will enable the schoolchildren to have proper P.E. sessions, lunchtimes and assemblies, as well as a venue for extra-curricular events such as shows and presentations. Other possibilities arising from the hall might include extra storage areas and toilets, a dedicated space for Downderry Playgroup in the mornings and a youth club in the evenings. The last two have been a pressing concern for a number of years, and would be welcomed by many in the local community.

Funding

Funding for capital projects in Church Schools is allocated by the Diocesan Board and Architect. After a number of visits and meetings, we have recently been informed that 90% of the build cost is available to the school. However, to qualify for this funding the school will still need to raise 10% of the overall cost of the project. This is where projects such as Mont Blanc for Downderry come in, so come on… please support us in any way you can and we will get this hall built!
